ONLINE SHOPPING IS FAILING WOMEN OVER 40
This isn’t about age. This isn’t about trends. And it isn’t about buying more. Most online shopping advice focuses on individual pieces — not how they’ll actually look on you or work together once they’re in your closet. The result? Jeans that don’t quite work, outfits that feel off, and capsule wardrobes that either overwhelm you with too many options or strip everything down until every outfit looks the same. It’s important to remember:

When you understand how to shop smarter online, choose better foundations, and build outfits you genuinely love, something shifts. Your wardrobe starts working again. Getting dressed feels easier and more fun.
This is about resurrecting your wardrobe — and reclaiming your enthusiasm for getting dressed.
Prepare yourself for the confidence and compliments that come with it.
Why Online Shopping Keeps Getting It Wrong
Website descriptions and images don’t accurately show you how something fits or looks on you. During the pandemic, when stores were closed and everyone had to shop online, I knew there had to be an easier way to find jeans that fit and look great, so I created Jen’s Jean Shop. If you can measure your rise and your inseam, you can use those measurements to shop online with confidence. Combine the right style with the right shoes, and I doubt you’ll wear anything but denim.
How To Measure
Your“Rise” – is the measurement from the center crotch seam to t your belly button. Use a soft tape measure.
A Jean’s “Rise” – is usually listed online and the measurement from the center crotch seam to the waistband.
Your (Full Length) “Inseam” –The measurement from the center crotch seam to ground when you step on a soft tape measure.
Jean “Inseam” –The measurement from the center crotch seam to the opening.
“Inseam” – the measurement from the center crotch seam to the opening. All of these styles are easy to hem with scissors.
How Long Should Your Jeans Be
You can keep your shoe and outfit options open by hemming your jeans to one of two lengths.

Style After 40 Doesn’t Disappear — It Evolves
Your style isn’t one note—it’s a whole playlist, and the songs change. Some days you’re classic, other days chic, bold, sporty, boho, or feminine. Most of us are a mix. Start by pinpointing the style profiles that resonate most, then choose the versions of these staples on my New Wardrobe Checklist that reflect your fashion DNA. When you shop my high-low mix, you’ll always get great cost-per-wear, but here’s the secret: when your staples align with your style, your cost-per-compliment skyrockets. That’s the power of this strategy—you don’t just build outfits, you build confidence in your personal style
Now that I’ve traded department store floors for online shopping tabs, my style is a curated high/low mix I swear by, and for every woman over 40, I shop for it always includes these 14 wardrobe essentials that make it easy to put together outfits that look effortlessly pulled together using what you already own or something new.

Top 10 Items Worth Buying In Multiples
For years, I preached: Thou shalt not buy multiples. But a recent deep dive into my own closet revealed I own at least ten pieces I love so much, I bought them in multiples. Turns out, when you find an MVP that earns its keep, buying in bulk isn’t a fashion fail – it’s a style strategy.

20+ years in Nordstrom dressing rooms showed me that most women don’t need more options. They need better editing, smarter foundations, and a clearer understanding of how clothes actually work together. That insight is what led to the Nordstrom 6 Drop.
The Nordstrom 6 Drop is a tightly edited selection of six pieces chosen for how they update a wardrobe to keep you looking current.
Coffee in My Closet is a weekly, interactive styling session where I show how to style pieces multiple ways, walk through my high–low brand mix in real time, and share the behind-the-scenes process of how outfits and capsule wardrobes actually come together.
Why Most Capsule Wardrobes Miss the Mark

I’m getting a reputation for something I’ve always despised, capsule wardrobes. Weather its packing a client for Europe, or refreshing their wardrobe for the season, I’ve been making personalized capsule wardrobes for over half my life! Most capsule wardrobe examples either have too many pieces that leave you guessing what goes together, or a minimal mix that makes boring outfits that all look the same. My capsule wardrobe examples are different.
