Dopamine Dressing | How to Style Oversized Fashion
You don’t have to look like a supermodel to wear oversized fashion. Supersized silhouettes are showing up everywhere and are here to stay for spring. Whether you follow fashion or you just want to wear oversized warm and cozy pieces, you’ll feel great in these oversized outfit formulas. My styling tips make outfits that are comfortable, flattering, and fashion forward.
OVERSIZED BOTTOMS
Oversized separates look the best with a slim shape. Wear a full skirt like this one with a tiny tee or fitted long-sleeve top. Let your statement pieces speak for themselves. You’ll look better if you don’t bury your body.
Full Skirts
Wear these black and white skirts now with a tiny turtleneck or this spring with a tiny tee.
Tiny Turtlenecks
If you want to wear oversized bottoms this winter you need a tiny turtleneck. A black turtleneck will keep you warm while slimming and elongating your upper body. This one from Saks for under $75 is my favorite. It’s super soft and doesn’t fade in the wash.
This sheer style I found on Amazon for under $20 looks just like the style I shared from Free People in my ’22 Holiday Capsule Wardrobe.
Wide Leg Jeans
Wide-leg jeans are so popular and can be so flattering. The most flattering shoes for wide-leg jeans are high heels. Because wide-leg jeans have so much room at the opening a block heel fills that space and looks the most balanced. You can also keep your leg line long and avoid 50/50 proportions when you wear shorter jackets.
Wide Leg Jeans Stats
Wide-leg flare jeans are oversized all over. Unlike a traditional boot cut flare-leg jean, wide leg flare jeans don’t taper at the top of your knee. They also have a much wider opening, closer to 20″ or more, compared to a classic flare which is 16.5″.
Block Heels
The most flattering shoes for wide-leg jeans are heels. Because wide-leg jeans have so much room at the opening block heel looks the most balanced.

The Simplest Styling Tip
Show off. That’s right. Show your shape. It’s more flattering.
Show a little skin around your wrists or ankles, push those sleeves up, ditch your socks, and show some skin!
Oversized Styling Staples For Winter
When it’s cold you can still show your shape without showing any skin. Wear opaque tights with shorts or a mini skirt. Supersize your style and elongate your legs with a matching pointed-toe shoe or platform pumps.

Show Off
Oversized layers look the best over a monochromatic column of color. If not, the trick is to avoid 50/50 proportions. You can add length to your proportions on your bottom half with high heels. A belt also brings the eye up.

Make it Work With a Midi or a Mini
Watch and you’ll see a mini skirt works better than a midi that makes 50/50.
Short Skirts
A short black skirt, or shorts like mine, with tights and closed-toe black suede shoes, work well with oversized shapes on top.
The Best Belts
A strategically placed belt can change your proportions for the better too. Here’s how to measure so you can buy a belt to wear through the belt loops of your favorite jeans or around your waist.
Skinny Belts
Belt bags can do what regular belts do too, but add an edgy street style vibe to your fit.
