Outfit Multipliers™ | Why My Capsule Wardrobes Don’t Look Like Capsule Wardrobes
My capsule wardrobes don’t look like capsule wardrobes.
They’re the pieces you reach for again and again because they take on different personalities. A dress decides it’s a skirt. A scarf volunteers to be a top. A sweater becomes an accessory. They layer, transform, and connect your wardrobe in unexpected ways. They’re the reason your capsule doesn’t feel like a capsule.
After twenty-six years as a professional stylist, I’ve learned to spot them immediately.
I call them Outfit Multipliers.
They don’t just give you more outfits. They give you more outfits you can’t wait to wear.
They don’t just change your outfits. They change how you feel when you open your closet.
Make your closet a boutique, not a storage unit.
In fact, if you’ve followed me for any length of time, you’ve already met them. You probably just didn’t know they had a name.
If you’ve packed one of my travel capsules, you’ve already met a few Outfit Multipliers. In fact, I shared ten of my favorites in my Travel Capsule Strategy. This time, I’m sharing the pieces that have quietly found their way into my everyday wardrobe and recent capsule collections.

OUTFIT MULTIPLIER™
The Cardigan That Thinks It’s a Scarf
Grade A cashmere, under $100, and available in 11 colors. This cardigan has become one of my favorite Outfit Multipliers.
By day, it lives around your shoulders like a scarf. The long, stretchy sleeves tie easily, stay put, and won’t add bulk around your waist. When the temperature drops, flip it around, button it up, and suddenly it’s a lightweight pullover.
This styling trick works with a long cardigan, too (featured in my Carry-On Capsule Checklist), or a shorter version like the one in my Weekend Getaway Capsule. Once you start wearing your cardigan as an accessory instead of just a sweater, you’ll wonder why you didn’t start sooner.
The Button-Up With Multiple Personalities
She changes her mind more than I change my shoes.
No piece has appeared in more capsule wardrobes than a great button-up. Not because it’s a basic, but because it refuses to play just one role.
Wear it open as a lightweight layer. Tie it at the waist. Tuck it. Half-tuck it. Throw it over a swimsuit. Layer it under a vest or sweater. Dress it up. Dress it down. Wear this one over a swimsuit.
The best Outfit Multipliers don’t require you to buy more clothes. They help you see more possibilities in the pieces you’re already excited to wear.

See Her In Action
This multiplier was the star of my first Instagram Styling Series.
The Dress That Decides It’s a Skirt
She’s just as happy on her own as she is pretending to be something else.
It’s one of the oldest styling tricks in my playbook, and I reach for it year after year. Pull a sweater or vest over the top and suddenly your dress is playing the role of a skirt.
One dress. More than one personality.
That’s why fit-and-flare dresses keep finding their way into my capsule wardrobes. That’s the beauty of an Outfit Multiplier.
Her Greatest Hits This Summer
The Scarf That Refuses to Stay Around Your Neck
It’s one of the smallest pieces in my wardrobe, but it has one of the biggest imaginations.
Somewhere along the way, scarves stopped being just scarves.
Tie one around your neck ten different ways. Wrap it around your waist. Tie it on your handbag. Use her as an excuse not to do your hair. Then wear her as a top.
One accessory. Familiar and fresh at the same time.

Sacred Scarf Hack
More reversible scarves like this one I styled as a top you can wear with a bra this summer.
There are four outfit multipliers in this capsule.
The Jeans That Get Along With Everyone
The jeans don’t change. The supporting cast does.
She gets along with everyone.
Sandals in August. Loafers in September. Boots by October. Swap the shoes, add a jacket, and she’s ready for a completely different season.
That’s why the right pair of jeans keeps finding its way into my capsule wardrobes. She isn’t trying to be the star of the show. She just makes everyone around her look better.

The Vest That Thinks It’s a Top
She never liked staying in her lane.
Wear her as a vest over a button-up. Then button her up and suddenly she’s the top. Layer her under a jacket when the weather cools down, or wear her on her own while it’s still warm.
One piece. More than one personality.
That’s what made this wrap vest one of my favorite recent Outfit Multipliers. She doesn’t ask you to choose between a layering piece or top. She happily plays both roles.

The Reversible Piece That Lives a Double Life
She wakes up every morning and decides who she wants to be.
One day she’s a scoop neck. The next she’s a V-neck. One side is simple. The other is a sassy print or pattern that changes the entire look.
Reversible pieces transform themselves. No cheat sheet required.
That’s what makes these reversible dresses and camisoles some of my newest favorite Outfit Multipliers. Twice the personality. Half the real estate in my closet.
The Denim Jacket That Cleans Up Nicely
She’s the friend who goes with you everywhere.
Throw her over a dress. Pair her with trousers. Wear her with matching denim for a modern Canadian tuxedo. She’s just as comfortable at a backyard barbecue as she is cleaning up for dinner.
That’s why I call a denim jacket a Capsule Wardrobe Kickstarter. It’s often the first piece I reach for because it gives everything around it another personality.
She’s part blazer, part best friend, and somehow always manages to show up exactly when you need her.

Summer Tuxedos Still In Stock
Sheer Skirt In The Winter
The Sheer Skirt That’s Misunderstood
Equal parts daring and demure.
Wear her over a swimsuit at the beach or with a blazer and heels to dinner.
She’s proof that the right Outfit Multiplier doesn’t belong to just one occasion. It simply changes with the occasion.
People think she’s only for vacation.
She’d like a word.

Copy and Paste

Not every piece deserves a place in your wardrobe.
When I’m shopping, I’m always asking myself:
- Does it have more than one personality?
- Can I style it at least two different ways?
- Does it connect pieces I already own?
- Am I excited about the outfits it creates?
If the answer is yes… It’s probably an Outfit Multiplier.
They’re the pieces that become the favorites you reach for again and again. The ones that make a capsule feel anything but boring. The ones that help you reclaim your enthusiasm for getting dressed.
I’ll keep adding new Outfit Multipliers to this guide as I discover them, so be sure to check back.
