The Ultimate casual Winter Capsule wardrobe for women over 40
Seven pieces. Thirty-six outfits. This casual winter capsule is built around the staples you already love—jeans, leggings, a quarter-zip, elevated sweats, a button-up, a great tee, and a versatile jacket. Pick your style lane, stick to your color story, and get dressed faster while looking more put-together than ever. These formulas are foolproof.
Styles for Women Over 40

I narrowed down the checklist so all of the items go together no matter which combination you choose. Since all women over 40 don’t have the same style, I made sure to give you a variety of choices for each key piece.

The colors we choose make us look and feel our best.

When you’re not 18, sweatpants and leggings can look sloppy and snug; that’s why my short checklist only includes styles and brands that I wear and have trusted for years.
Effortless Outfits

This casual winter capsule for women over 40 might be the only one you need, but it’s nice to know it works effortlessly with pieces you already own.

The Canadian tuxedo, quite possibly my favorite monochromatic outfit builder.
1. Button Up

Frank & Eileen flannels are my favorite. They are so soft. If you like the look of a flannel but run warm try these from Rails.

2. Quater Zip

My 3 favorite zip-ups this winter are this cashmere one, it’s under $120 and slightly ribbed, so it resists pilling, this Spanx AirEssentials lightweight with a longer zipper that creates a flattering open neckline, and Gap’s recycled fleece.

You can get this Quarter Zip and matching sweatpants in black, grey, brown, and burgundy. Spanx Air Essentials separates come in 8 color options!

3. Quality Tee

Every January I kiss a lot of frogs before I find my new Prince of white tee. These all pass my test. They’re thick, don’t cling, look good tucked or untucked, and have flattering sleeves.
4. Green Jacket

A utility or barn jacket are the most versatile, but a cool cape coat or classic bomber jacket are also good choices.
5. Leggings

If you’re going to do stirrup leggings again, then they should be these from Spanx. They’re slimming and come in three different lengths. Looking for a style to suit your sporty side, these booty-boosting full-length leggings don’t disappoint. Get 15% off your first regular price order plus free shipping at Spanx with my promo code JENNIFERXSPANX. These Vuori leggings never go on sale, probably because they are so popular. The tie waist makes them look less like leggings and more like a lounge pant.
6. Jeans

I just tried this style from Paige with a 31″ inseam, 16 1/2″ leg opening, and 11 1/2″ front rise. They fit great and check all the boxes. I think they’re the perfect blend of a premium denim with vintage-inspired fabric details.
Premium denim brand Pistola has that vintage vibe down. This longer cropped style will go with ANY shoe or boot you choose, and comes in petite sizes too. This style runs big so if you don’t like a relaxed fit or are in between sizes, size down. Use code 15Jen to save on everything at Pistoladenim.com.
My current crush is this high-rise button fly style called “Cassie”. I typically don’t pick high-waisted styles. (This one has a 12.5″ rise), but I love how long my legs look in them.
I have this style from MOTHER and these from Pistola (I have them on in the video above). They’re both great because you can roll them up to wear with flats and sneakers, but they’re long enough to dress up with heels.
LEVI’S
It doesn’t get any more classic than a pair of Levis. The 501 Curve is probably the most versatile with winter flats and boots.

7. Sweatpants

You can get this Quarter Zip and matching sweatpants in black, grey, brown, and burgundy. Spanx Air Essentials separates come in 8 color options!
