The First Move Behind Every Closet Choreography Capsule
Most “minimalistic” capsule wardrobes start the same way—a checklist of “safe” pieces and high hopes. Then you put it on and wonder why it looks like… a capsule wardrobe. Like the same outfit showed up twice and hoped no one would notice—very Emily in Paris walk-of-shame, just less charming. Mine don’t start there. This is where I always start.
The starting point is what edits my list of contenders down to the right pieces—the ones that still mix and match no matter what and pull double duty, but don’t feel like a copy-paste capsule.
Start with the inspiration. A color story. A piece you can’t wait to wear. If you use my trademark tips when you repeat pieces, it will look less like a walk of shame and more like Project Runway. That’s what takes a minimal capsule from predictable to personal—and out of its uniform era.
The Color Story — This Is Where It Gets Interesting

A color story gives you direction before you even pick the pieces—and it’s the easiest way to make a capsule look styled from the start.
Pick a print. A bold floral dress. A patterned scarf. Let it pull the palette together for you.

Start packing for more than two weeks in Europe with a scarf!

Printed pieces that are on my Capsule Wardrobe Outfit Multiplier List, like this blouse that looks great styled as a cardigan, do more than just inspire your color story.
My favorite printed pieces are graphic tees and sweatshirts. See more samples HERE.

Not into prints? Build from neutrals. Black, white, tan—and add one accent color to wake it up.
There is a reason why they say opposites attract. This is a color wheel. Did you know that the colors opposite one another are considered complementary colors?

Prefer a simple two-tone or monochromatic story? Skip the pattern and lean into silhouette and texture instead.
Neutral Prints

This polka dot dress has so many personalities and looks great with this Amazon jacket. Watch.
Neutral prints like stripes and animal prints are the ones that play well with others. They mix with bold prints if that’s your thing—or keep a monochromatic capsule from falling flat. Vary the scale and keep the color story similar, and you can even wear two together.
The Hero Piece — Where the Style Comes From

This is your inspiration. Choose something you love—or have been waiting for an excuse to wear. Something that gets you in the mood.
I’m planning a trip to Italy, so I’m leaning into Italian brands like Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Pucci, and Prada. I’ll pick one piece in line with their signature style and make it the cornerstone of my capsule.
This can also be your brand bucket list moment. An investment piece—or something you’ve been eyeing forever—that instantly makes a minimal mix of high–low brands look designer. This shortcut to style has become the calling card to my most popular capsule wardrobes.
