Rebrand Your Wardrobe Basics
I hear it all the time. ” I would have never thought of that.” When it comes to what you wear, never say never. Your next “new” outfit may be disguised as a basic you’re bored with. Most fashion fans over 40 will admit there are some styles we’ve worn during more than one decade. The difference between those styles looking dated or like you just got them is all about how you style them. I’m rebranding my skinny jeans, classic cardigan, barn jacket, and corduroy pants this fall. Copy these outfits.
Skinny Jeans or Slim Black Pants?
Every woman needs a great pair of slimming black pants. These black skinny jeans will be a casual and work wardrobe staple for me again this winter.
4 Reasons Not to Ditch Your Skinny Jeans
- Jeans hold you in, and the butt pockets make them more flattering than leggings.
- A fitted ankle length style will go with all of your winter shoes.
- Unlike most black leggings, the spandex in a nice of jeans like this will keep them from stretching out and fading fast.
- Skinny jeans keep your proportions in check when you want to wear a bulky sweater or an oversized jacket.
Top 3 Skinny Jeans I Consider Wardrobe Basics
Corduroy Comeback
Corduroy pants are one of four new things that will make over your current fall capsule wardrobe without having to buy a new one! Wide-leg corduroy pants are such an easy substitute for cargo pants or wide-leg jeans on my Fall Wardrobe Workshop Checklist because they are the same shape as the jean sand cargo pants on the list, so they will go with many of the same things.
The same brown corduroy pants I’m wearing also come in olive green. Both are great neutral colors that go with a lot. I especially love olive green and burgundy together. Did you know they are complimentary colors?
These Veronica Beard corduroy pants are on sale now. I love this style because it goes with fall flats, kitten heels, and is even wide enough at the opening to wear over boots.
Wardrobe Basic Barn Jacket Street Style
This might be the same jacket you wore to the pumpkin patch with your over-the-knee boots before, but. this staple has made a street-style comeback. The most unexpected combinations are always the most fashionable. In this style session on YouTube, I shared how to style a barn jacket with a sheer skirt, short skirt, and denim dress.
Stop Wearing Your Skinny Jeans
The biggest difference between the way we are wearing a basic barn jacket and jeans now and how we did before is by oversizing our silhouettes. Size up in your jacket and wear it with wide-leg jeans. If you don’t want to wear heels then I recommend ankle-length wide-leg jeans with an opening no wider than 20″.
A style like the one I’m wearing from MOTHER will work with your sneakers and won’t overwhelm your silhouette if you’re not tall. It’s also a versatile enough jean style to wear with boots. The key is finding a wide-leg style with a slightly narrower opening than traditional wide-leg leg jeans.

A Classic Cardigan Reinvented
I think I’ve had a classic cardigan in every color under the sun. Most of mine served as work wardrobe staples for me over slacks and a short-sleeved blouse. Over the last two decades, I have supersized this classic shrunken cardigan and styled it over some of my most casual outfits. Now I’m wearing one in brown with modern jeans, a short skirt, stirrup leggings, and an oversized blazer. A colorful cropped cardigan was the cornerstone of this popular 2023 resort capsule wardrobe checklist.
Crewneck Cardigans
Modern Twist on a “Twin Set”
I just got this super soft (not itchy) crew neck cashmere cardigan under $100 with a matching modern crop top.
We are seeing this classic crewneck cardigan again on everyone from young starlets to soccer moms. Try the “quiet luxury” trend by wearing a classic button-up cashmere cardigan with your most casual and dressy classic staples.
Embellished cardigans with pearls and bows are trending.
