High/Low Shopping Directory
If you are trying to find your style start with a high/low mix of brands. It’s the best way to create a style that is uniquely yours. Save this directory and these shopping tips to transform your wardrobe and embrace your unique style.
High/Low Do’s and Don’ts
Do
- Wear pieces you love
- Look for styles inspired by designer brands
- Look for quality looks for less made with natural materials like real leather
- Mix your designer-inspired pieces with real ones
Don’t
- Buy brand names just because
- Buy copies or dupes of logos
- Choose pieces with lots of hardware
- Compromise fit
High/Low With Chanel
My friend Hector, who sells Chanel at his boutique, had to do a double take when he saw this quilted belt bag with Chanel-inspired hardware. It’s ok to wear your Chanel bag with shoes from Walmart! Sometimes, our feet don’t fit into designer shoes. Oftentimes, the look for less is wider and more comfortable.
Bottega Veneta Accessories
Because of its understated style, it’s easy to find Bottega-inspired pieces. I’m saving for a beautiful signature clutch, but until then I’ve seen a few more of their sold-out and trending styles for less. This one is genuine leather. I’ll never regret buying these beautiful Lido sandals, made in Italy. I’m shocked at how comfortable they are, and love that they stand the test of time. A Bottega belt is so versatile. This wrap style would look good over a winter coat, dress, or blazer.
Alexander McQueen
These bags are on my bucket list, but I love my McQueen-inspired shoes.
Belts
Do you want a designer look on a budget? Save with a designer belt. This little piece makes the biggest difference. Designer belts are good introductory designer price points and can be worn all year. Don’t settle for pleather. Don’t buy dupes. If the buckle includes a logo, it should be authentic. Buy belts that do double duty, like reversible and wrap styles.
Designer Inspired Earrings
A statement earring may be the only accessory your outfit needs. A good pair goes a long way, but quality metals and name brands are expensive. You can use the look-for-less to “fake it until you make it” or test-drive an expensive style.
High Low With Isabel Marant
This blog post demonstrates how I use a high-low mix of brands to recreate outfits for real women like you, inspired by Isabel Marant and her celebrity clients. Since 1994 Isabel Marant has been a bucket list designer brand that epitomizes every woman’s cool girl fantasy. Flirty graphic sweatshirts and tees, wrap belts, western boots, ditsy print dresses, and smocked skirts combine to make outfits that are a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll. The key is knowing when to splurge and when to save so you can mix the pieces to create a laid-back blend of bohemian and Parisian street style.
Signature Styles Worth Splurging On
When to Spend and When to Save on a Veronica Beard Blazer
Save on the “Scuba” style that I found under $100 but retails for $645. The look for less has the same measurements, fabric, dickey collar, and monochromatic hardware. Spend on the Veronica Beard Miller blazer. The look for less is made with shiny and thin fabric, plus it has inexpensive, nonfunctional hardware.
Buy the hooded dickies I found that work with both the look-for-less and the OG. Buy the denim Dickey from Veronica Beard. It’s the coolest way to dress down your blazer and there’s no other way you would wear a jean jacket under one otherwise.
