Caring for Cashmere

Caring for cashmere so it lasts for a long time is easy and much less expensive than you think. I just found the best quality affordable cashmere brand. I’ve been wearing it so often that I decided to buy more so that I could wash what I’ve been wearing on repeat. This is what I used and how I did it to avoid expensive dry cleaning and harsh chemicals. I wear my cashmere pieces all year round and keep them in my closet. This is the best way to fold or hang cashmere sweaters you’re wearing or store them when you’re not. Continue reading to shop and see what makes quality cashmere.
What Makes Quality Cashmere?
Cashmere material comes from the wool of cashmere goats, not sheep. Cashmere is collected ethically from goats in the Spring when they naturally shed their winter coats. The undercoat is the softest and is used to make pieces you want to wear. Grade A cashmere is the best, retains its shape, and most of all feels amazing. Mongolian Grade A cashmere is the benchmark for quality cashmere. The cashmere I’ve been buying from Quince is Mongolian Grade A cashmere. Although many of the styles I’ve gotten look a lot like name brands like Jenni Kayne and VINCE, that I have been wearing for years, these pieces are less that half the price.

The Look for Less
This is my favorite cashmere pullover and the one I washed for you. I love it so much. I have it in 3 colors, and I still spent less on all of them than I would have if I got her from Jenni Kayne.

A lightweight v-neck or crew neck sweater like this is great to layer under warmer layers or under thinner ones. This one comes in 15 colors for under $50 each!

I included VINCE’s Weekend Cardigan in my Carryon Capsule Wardrobe. Even at $495, you’ll have difficulty finding her in stock. I absolutely love the look for less.

I love that I got this hoodie and the matching pants for less than just the name-brand hoodie alone.

This might be the best deal yet. This cashmere dickey is only $49 and comes in 3 colors. The Veronica Beard version is $298. The best part is that the $49 version works with any of the Veronica Beard dickey blazers.

Caring for Cashmere Without Dry Cleaning
- Remove pills with a sweater stone or comb
- Use a mild soap made for knits (This one is my favorite and smells amazing.) and soak for about 30 minutes in cold water.
- Use a towel to roll and remove as much moisture as possible.
- Reshape and air dry flat on a rack.
- Steam if needed
How to Fold or Hang Your Sweaters
I wear my cashmere pieces all year round and keep them in my closet. This is the best way to fold or hang cashmere sweaters you’re wearing or store them when you’re not.
If you want your cashmere to last longer, wear it often and only wash it once in a while. In between washing, you can use a natural fabric freshener that’s infused with cedar or lavender essential oils to keep your cashmere fresh and free from pests. Always wash your knits before you store them away, and never keep them in plastic. Your trapped body oils and fragrances will attract insects and natural fibers need to breathe.
