Often it’s the lines we draw on our bodies with the pieces we wear that make or break an outfit. The goal is to start and stop the eye where you want. Strategically placing a belt is an easy way to do that. Wearing a belt at the right spot makes it the most flattering accessory you can own.

MAKE THE SHAPE YOU WANT

Avoid drawing lines on your body that make you look 50/50 with the pieces you’re wearing. Depending on where you put it, you can use a belt to elongate your torso or lengthen your leg line.

HERE’S HOW…

Buckle a thin belt over a blousy blazer, just above your natural waist. This moves the eye up and starts your leg line here instead of the top of your jeans. Now even with crop jeans, your leg line will be closer to 2/3 your overall look and your torso 1/3. Much better.

Master high low styling with this combination. These long lightweight blazers are easy to belt.

Rework a midi dress that cuts up your lower leg line by belting it and visually starting your leg line higher. This really works well on looser dresses where your natural body shape is hidden or with a midi dresses you want to wear with flats.

ADD A WAIST

A belt can add a waist wherever you want one. Try belting and blousing an oversized sweater. If you are busty or short-waisted, sling it closer to your hips. If your natural waist is small, show it off.
