The Canadian Tuxedo| Two Denim Pieces That Fix a Boring Wardrobe
An outfit formula I’ve used for decades is a matching top and bottom. This can kickstart a capsule wardrobe because it gives you an instant outfit and two pieces you can wear a dozen other ways. My fashion fix right now is an updated Canadian tuxedo—a great pair of jeans and a matching denim jacket. Think less lumberjack, more effortless icon. Wear them together like Butch and the Sundance Kid, or break them apart and let each piece stand on its own.
This isn’t a trend. Long before anyone debated “double denim,” Marilyn Monroe made the case for it in The Misfits—simple jeans, a denim shirt or jacket, and that relaxed confidence that makes the whole thing look easy. The right denim pieces can fix a boring wardrobe and multiply everything already hanging in your closet.
In this post I’m sharing my personal styling strategy for making the Canadian tuxedo work, including styles from brands many of us already love like MOTHER and Madewell—along with look-for-less options and promo codes so you can recreate the outfit without overspending.

2026 Canadian Tuxedo Outfit Edit
MOTHER
I’m loving all the light-wash denim combinations from MOTHER this season. The Bookie jeans (in the this is how I roll wash) on bottom, and the Bruiser, a classic denim jacket with a slightly cropped fit, on top, will give you a ton of outfit possibilities.
The Brookie jeans fit and look more like a tuxedo “trouser”. The Half-Pipe ankle jeans match the Bruiser jacket, too. They are rigid and have a high 12″ rise. Their ultra-versatile ankle length with a 19″ opening makes them the best choice if you want to wear them with any of your shoes.
I’m 5’4″ and sized down in these cool new Half Pipe Hover Barrel jeans with a slimming side panel, and matched them up with this ultra lightweight snap front denim shirt with frayed hem, that doubles as a jacket.
This light-wash denim looks so good when mixed and matched with bright white and icy pastels like lemon yellow.
Pistola
You can use my promo code 15JEN if you want to shop the set I’m loving from Pistola. The Pistola Donny slouchy ankle jeans can be worn cuffed or uncuffed and are incredibly soft. The website calls them high-rise, but the relaxed fit sits slightly lower on me, and I sized down.
The matching Pistola Bibi Jacket surprised me. I almost skipped it because I already own plenty of denim jackets, but this one made it onto my 2026 New Wardrobe Checklist. It’s oversized with a blouson hem that gives it a softer, more feminine shape.
Think less lumberjack, more effortless icon. I’ve been wearing my jacket over my casual outfits like wide-leg sweatpants and sneakers. This is what it looks like.
Madewell
Madewell understood the assignment and nailed it with these loose jeans under $150. This rigid wash is so popular and comes in three lengths.
Pair them with the cropped Denim Chore Jacket and your Canadian tuxedo will feel modern instead of matchy. The jacket is under $150 too and reminds me a much more expensive Veronica Beard style.
Spanx

SPANX isn’t the first brand I think of for jeans, but after trying their corduroy pants, I’m a convert. These straight-leg jeans come in two colors and three inseams: Petite 27″, Regular 29″, and Tall 32″. The 360° shaping panel is a game-changer, smoothing the tummy, waist, and booty.
The dark denim wash is classic, and the matching stretch shacket keeps the Canadian tuxedo feeling modern. Dark indigo denim looks so fresh for spring, paired with white eyelet, navy blue, and bright greens and reds.
