Get Your Fall Wardrobe Ready By Learning to Layer

One of the best things you can do to get your wardrobe ready for fall is learning to layer. Everyone wants pulled-together casual outfits and this is a foolproof formula that works every time. I know the calendar says fall but in some places, it still feels like summer. These outfit ideas include a high-low brand mix of different layering options that will help you make chic casual outfits you can wear now and when it’s much colder.

For all of you visual learners out there start here. Then shop your closet and the links in this blog post to recreate outfits you love.

Stylish Sweats

Spanx’s trademarked “air essentials” buttery soft separates are always in rotation in my closet. This fabric is light enough to layer but thick enough to not show through. The fabric is smooth and stretchy. Unlike its classic cotton sweatpants counterparts, this material isn’t a magnet for lint. The spandex also helps dark colors keep their color wash after wash. You can get the look for less. These separates are all under. They are sized more generously and are a little thinner. If you run warm or live in a warmer climate this may be a good choice for you. If you opt for a light color, like winter white, you may need to wear them with a nude bra or Spanx.

Classic Layers

Leather Jacket

A leather jacket is one of the ultimate classic layering pieces. I’ve had mine from All Saints for years and wear it all year long. Size up for the best fit or try one of these other brands.

Bomber Jackets

You can also find leather or vegan leather bomber jackets. Bomber jackets never go out of style, but are at the height of fashion right now. Aside from leather, I recommend at least one classic nylon style. If you’re looking for something ultra lightweight I’d recommend this ivory one or this nylon style with gathered sleeves.

Jean Jacket

I’m embarrassed to tell you how many jean jackets I own, yet I couldn’t resist this denim bomber. If you already own an arsenal of classic jean jackets consider updating your casual look with a new style like a bomber, or anything dark denim.

The Layered Look for Less

The best faux fur jacket I’ve ever found is here. It’s oversized, super soft, not shiny, and looks so expensive!

This felted jacket from Nordstrom with scalloped top stitching has all the feel of this Toteme jacket that sells for over $1000.

$35

I’ve always had a soft spot for a soft shearling jacket, but the name brands I’d like to buy are hundreds of dollars and thousands of dollars. I just scored this one for $35. It’s soft, looks like leather, and considering the cost per wear, the perfect choice for this CA girl.

Soft Layers

If you love prints and patterns a shaket is fun! This one from Amazon comes in lots of different color combinations under $30.

Cardigans

Soft layers work well too. This duster cardigan comes in multiple neutral colors, petite, and regular sizes. I’ve seen a lot of sweaters that “look” similar, but nothing that compares to this durable fabric. It’s such a great staple that I’ve included it in more than one of my classic capsule wardrobes. The black, tan, and grey work well in my 69 outfit Chic Casual Capsule Wardrobe. You’ll also find her in my Classic Capsule Wardrobe for Work which I just updated with new shopping links.

Don’t Forget Accessories

Trade out your sports slides for sneakers, but skip socks. Boots work well too, especially under wide-leg sweatpants. Belt bags are the best bags for travel and every day!
